This is the 5th time in a row that Sierra Nevada Brewery have asked us (PAUL Component Engineering) to build a bike for them to show off at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, which kicks off this week. So, we must be doing something right!
A while back, I saw Ira Ryan from Breadwinner Cycles at a Cross Crusades race in Portland prepping his bike for his race. He had ridden to the event from his home so he had two cages and two bottles and with less than a quarter rotation of an allen key had removed his bottle cages and was ready for his race.
I review a lot of bikes and tend to put frame bags and bottle cages on and off my bikes that I’ll use for touring, so I adopted his trick. Check out the details below.

Small businesses are the foundation of the outdoor industry and many have been seriously impacted by the pandemic over the last couple of months. While money is understandably tight for a significant portion of people, if you do have the means and are dreaming up your next bike trip or local ride, I wanted to offer up a few suggestions for gear that I believe is worthy of investing in from some of my favorite small businesses in the industry.
If there’s one thing that’s consistent across all my personal builds, it’s King Cage. I either have Wolf Tooth’s Morse cages or the original classics. For those looking for some extra bling, Wolf Tooth just made a limited batch of gold Morse Cages in titanium and stainless. They’re in stock now and ready to ship at Wolf Tooth!
Bike thieves suck. Colin got his last Sklar road bike stolen last year here in Los Angeles. It was one of those moments where we all dropped what we were doing and rode all over the neighborhood looking for it. While that event was less than ideal, the resulting bike is what is featured here on the Radavist today.
I love seeing collaborations like this. Wolf Tooth components had an idea and could have probably sourced their own fabrication means themselves to make a cage like this, but instead, they reached out to King Cage, because that’s what King Cage does better than anyone. That idea is a cage with various mounting points, to make the best use out of your limited space. The result is something that adds practicality to a tried and true design. Hats off to all parties! Swoop up a Morse Cage at Wolf Tooth.

So… I’ve seen these before, but never had a chance to pick up a set, or photograph them in action. Luckily, Ocean Air Cycles did both of those for us. Ron at King Cage makes these. They’re essentially a hose clamp with a bottle boss welded onto it, allowing you to ad bottle cages to virtually any area of your bike. Just make sure you wrap your frame or fork with a protective tape as shown. Head to your local King Cage dealer to scoop up a set!
